Most conversations about XLAs start way too far in the future with slide decks, maturity models, philosophical debates about experience versus performance. Meanwhile, users are still locked out of systems, meetings still start late, and tickets still close without anyone feeling particularly helped.
The fastest way to make XLAs real is to stop treating them like a transformation program. Treat them like experiments. Small, imperfect, and grounded with everyday friction. You don’t need a new platform or a twelve-month roadmap. You just need a few indicators that tell you whether or not people can actually get their work done.
These five XLAs are meant to get you moving. They’re not exhaustive or elegant but they’re achievable in about 30 days, using data and behaviors you already see every week in most shops.
Identity Services: Access should not be a struggle.
Identity is invisible when it works and painfully obvious when it doesn’t. Most users don’t think in terms of identity services. They think in terms of “I can’t log in” or “I am blocked from doing my job.” A practical identity XLA focuses on that moment. Can someone get into the systems they need without jumping through hoops?
The easiest place to start is onboarding. Look at how long it takes a new hire to log in on their first day. Not when the ticket was closed, but when they actually got access. Then follow it up with one simple check. Did access show up when it was supposed to? You will quickly see gaps that ticket metrics hide. Delays between approval and activation. Access that technically exists but doesn’t work in practice. These are experience problems, even if the SLA looks fine.
Endpoint Services: Devices should be ready when work starts.
Endpoints are personal. When a laptop misbehaves, it doesn’t feel like an IT issue. It feels like a bad start to the day. Instead of measuring how fast devices get fixed, focus on whether they are usable when people sit down to work. That shift alone changes the conversation.
Define what “ready” means in your environment. It might be a successful boot, network connection, and access to core applications within a reasonable time. Endpoint tools can tell you how often that standard is met. A short sentiment check after major issues tells you how it felt on the other side. This XLA quietly reframes endpoint support. Network Services: Connectivity that users trust.

A network XLA should reflect that reality. Start by looking at where complaints cluster. Certain offices, remote workers, or peak times usually stand out fast. Pair that with lightweight experience checks during known trouble windows. What you’re really measuring is confidence. Do people trust the network to hold up when they need it? That insight is often more valuable than any other performance graph.
Collaboration Services: Meetings that work the first time.
Nothing kills momentum like starting a meeting by troubleshooting audio. Everyone has been there. Cameras fail. Links break. Five minutes disappear before the conversation even begins. A collaboration XLA is about reliability from the user’s point of view. Can people join, speak, and share without friction?
Most collaboration platforms already track failures. Missed joins, dropped calls, repeated retries. What they don’t tell us is how disruptive those moments feel. A short follow-up after a resolved issue helps fill that gap and over time, patterns emerge. Some issues are minor annoyances. Others quietly sabotage productivity and trust. XLAs help you tell the difference.
Cross-Service Support: Feeling supported matters.
This XLA cuts across everything else. Users will tolerate a lot if they feel informed and taken seriously. They lose patience quickly when communication disappears. You can surface this experience with a single question added to incident closure. Did the user feel informed while the issue was happening? Pair that with response and update timing you already track. This often reveals that the problem isn’t technical at all. It’s about expectations, updates, and tone. Those are solvable problems once you can see them.

If a metric improves and no user notices, it’s not an XLA. Experience metrics should feel slightly uncomfortable because they introduce perspective. They force you to see IT the way your users do, not the way dashboards do. XLAs aren’t about winning arguments. They’re about learning where things actually hurt.
